Scattles perhaps has it’s origins in the old Skittles game of Kayles played in the 14th century. Rather than using a ball to knock down the Skittles (Pins) a Stick or Log is thrown at the Pins.

Skittle games using a Stick or Log are still relatively common in parts of Europe and by playing Scattles you can be the start of a British revival of these types of games.

To play, set up the twelve Scattles pins in a group as shown in the picture, about 15 feet (4 – 5 metres) from the throwing point.

After tossing a coin to see who starts, the first player throws the log at the Skittles and attempts to knock down as many as possible.

Now add up the scores shown on each of the fallen Pins. The pins are then reset in the positions they have fallen.

It is now the next player turn to throw the Log and the process is repeated until all players have taken their turn.

The next round and rounds their on are always started by the player with the lowest points total.

Scores are accumulated and the first player to reach exactly 50 points wins. However, if a total score goes over 50, then that player’s score goes back down to 25.

Notes: If a player fails to knock down any pin in 3 successive turns, they are out of the game.

You will soon discover that Scattles is quite a tactical game. If the Scattles pins are scattered too widely it becomes somewhat easier for a following player to fell the exact pin they require.
